Same work. Said like it counts.
Most HR generalist resumes describe the job. Hiring managers look for the scale and the result. Here is the move, on one line.
Handled HR tasks including onboarding and employee questions.
Onboarded 45 new hires in a year, ran benefits open enrollment for 120 employees, and answered policy questions inside one business day.
Illustrative example. It shows the method; it is not a real person’s resume.
Use your own numbers. If you do not know a figure, leave it out. A guessed number can cost you the interview.
What recruiters scan for first.
A first pass on a resume is quick. These five things should be easy to find in that time, ideally in the top third of the page.
- Headcount you supported.
- Areas you covered: recruiting, onboarding, benefits, leave, employee relations.
- HRIS and payroll systems, named.
- Compliance work: I-9, FMLA, handbooks, state rules.
- Certification such as SHRM-CP or PHR if you hold one.

HR generalist resume questions.
Do HR generalist jobs require SHRM certification?
Usually it is a plus, not a requirement. Two of the three postings we read listed SHRM-CP or PHR as a plus. If you are studying for it, say so with a date.
How do I show employee relations work without sharing private details?
Describe the type and volume, such as cases handled or investigations supported, and the outcome in general terms. Never name people.
Can I move into HR from an office or admin role?
Yes. Lead with the people work you already did: onboarding, scheduling, payroll inputs, policy questions.
Nearby roles.
Skills carry between jobs more than titles suggest. If you are weighing a move, the guides for administrative assistant and receptionist resumes use the same method on their own postings, and so do the ones for teacher and bookkeeper roles. Every guide we have built is listed on the resume guides page.
